Personalized to Your English Level
You don't have to know your English level before getting started. New clients begin with an initial evaluation to help identify their current English abilities, strengths, areas for improvement, and individual learning goals. Instruction can then be tailored to the learner's current level and needs using the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) as a guide.
Your Goals Guide Your Tutoring
English learners don't all need the same thing. One client may want to become more confident having everyday conversations. Another may need help with grammar and writing. Another may want to strengthen English for school or work. Your tutoring plan will focus on the skills that are most relevant to you, rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach.
Understanding Your English Learning Journey
Learning English is a journey, and every learner progresses at a different pace. The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) provides a helpful way to understand English proficiency from beginner through advanced levels.
English Proficiency Levels
A1 — Beginner
Understands and uses basic everyday words and phrases.
A2 — Elementary
Communicates in simple, familiar everyday situations.
B1 — Intermediate
Communicates about familiar topics, experiences, needs, and opinions.
B2 — Upper Intermediate
Communicates independently and discusses more complex topics.
C1 — Advanced
Uses English effectively in social, academic, and professional settings.
C2 — Proficiency
Communicates complex ideas with a high degree of fluency and precision.
How Long Does It Take to Learn English?
Learning a language takes time. Meaningful progress can happen within weeks and months, but reaching advanced English proficiency may take hundreds of hours of learning and consistent practice over several years. Cambridge English provides the following approximate cumulative guided learning hours from beginner level:
A1 — Beginner: 90–100 hours
A2 — Elementary: 180–200 hours
B1 — Intermediate: 350–400 hours
B2 — Upper Intermediate: 500–600 hours
C1 — Advanced: 700–800 hours
C2 — Proficiency: 1,000–1,200 hours
These are general estimates, not guaranteed timelines. Your learning time may vary based on your starting level, previous English experience, frequency of instruction, independent practice, and exposure to English.
Practice Between Sessions Matters
Tutoring provides personalized instruction, guided practice, feedback, and support. However, regular practice outside of tutoring is an important part of learning English.
Students may be encouraged to:
-
Complete assigned homework or practice
-
Review vocabulary and grammar
-
Read in English
-
Listen to English regularly
-
Practice speaking and conversation
-
Write in English
-
Use English in everyday situations when possible
The more consistently you engage with English, the more opportunities you have to strengthen the skills introduced during tutoring.
Setting Attainable English Goals
Rather than promising fluency within a specific number of weeks or months, we'll work together to establish realistic and measurable goals based on your current English level and individual needs.
Your goals might include:
-
Becoming more confident speaking English
-
Improving everyday conversation
-
Expanding your vocabulary
-
Strengthening grammar
-
Improving pronunciation
-
Understanding spoken English more easily
-
Improving reading comprehension
-
Developing stronger writing skills
-
Communicating more effectively at school or work
-
Working toward the next English proficiency level
Every Step Is Progress
You don't have to reach an advanced level before your English learning is successful. Having a conversation you couldn't have before, understanding more of what you hear, using new vocabulary independently, writing more clearly, or simply feeling more confident speaking English are all meaningful signs of progress. At Rise & Advance Tutoring, the goal is to help you build practical, lasting English skills—one attainable goal at a time. Individual progress varies. Rise & Advance Tutoring does not guarantee that a student will reach a particular English proficiency level within a specific number of tutoring sessions or months.
