How Academic Coaching Works
Personalized Support for Developing Stronger Academic Habits
Academic coaching is designed for students who may understand their schoolwork but need additional support with the skills and habits that help them succeed independently. Rather than focusing on teaching a particular academic subject, coaching focuses on areas such as organization, time management, studying, note-taking, goal setting, motivation, learning strategies, and test preparation.
Academic coaching may be a good fit for students who:
-
Have difficulty staying organized or keeping track of assignments
-
Frequently procrastinate or struggle to get started on schoolwork
-
Have trouble managing their time or meeting deadlines
-
Study often but aren’t sure whether they’re studying effectively
-
Need help developing better note-taking or learning strategies
-
Have difficulty setting and following through with academic goals
-
Struggle with motivation or consistency
-
Need additional accountability to stay on track
-
Want to become more confident and independent as students
-
Need help developing a more effective approach to preparing for tests
Personalized to Each Student
Academic coaching begins by identifying the student’s current strengths, challenges, habits, and goals. From there, coaching priorities are established and an individualized action plan is developed. Sessions focus on the areas where the student needs the most support rather than following a one-size-fits-all program. Progress is reviewed periodically so strategies and goals can be adjusted as the student’s needs change.
Academic Coaching vs. Subject Tutoring
Academic coaching focuses on how a student learns and manages their academic responsibilities, while subject tutoring focuses primarily on understanding specific academic content. For example, a math tutor may help a student understand fractions or algebra. Academic coaching may help that same student develop a study schedule, organize assignments, take more useful notes, prepare for an upcoming test, or follow through with weekly academic goals.
